Sleep for Sport

Many of the athletes that I work with take their training very seriously. However, unfortunately, few of them take recovery as seriously as their training, despite it being integral to improving performance and minimising risk of injury. Even less importance is put on sleep, despite it playing a major part in your recovery from training. Not just that but it is a basic human necessity, vital for maintaining overall physical and mental health. With this in mind, I created this simple infographic to highlight some of the key points of the links between sport and sleep.

Getting at least 8 hours of sleep at night has been shown to have the following benefits:

  • Reduced risk of injury and illness
  • Improved reaction times
  • Better mood and motivation
  • Optimal hormone release to aid physical and mental recovery
  • Aids with learning and memory – vital for skill based sports
  • Lower levels of fatigue

If you are serious enough about your sport, or even just your health in general, then it pays to be serious about sleep. A quality night’s sleep may well have more impact than squeezing in that extra training session – and it’s free and easy!
